It’s hard enough as a parent to know what to do for the best. There’s constant anxiety of if you are doing the right thing for your child, what products to use, whether to let them self soothe or not, what to feed, how to sleep.
When you add in the uncertainty and complex emotions of having a child with allergies or eczema, the pressure can be overwhelming. With lack of sleep and conflicting advice of what you should and shouldn’t do for your baby, especially when the application of a new skincare product or introduction of a new food could potentially add to their discomfort, It's hard to know where to turn.
In the case of skin conditions, we look to our basic products like nappy rash cream, baby oil and moisturiser, lovingly gathered before baby’s arrival, for reassurance. What we can then be faced with is a list of ingredients, full of hidden chemicals that confuse us even more. Even the seemingly gentle and organic products can take us by surprise with artificial fragrances and preservatives we then read can aggravate skin. The growing awareness of topical steroid withdrawal adds to the worry of prescribed solutions and just contributes to the stress of knowing who or what to trust.
SOS Balm was developed as a solution to those skin problems. A mother, facing the exact same scenario hundreds of parents face, needed a solution for her daughter with eczema and allergies. Disappointed after trying hundreds of products, natural or otherwise, she took things into her own hands. She didn't just want something natural and substandard, she wanted something that really worked. Intent on creating a natural product to out do her old favourites and show that it could be done. What she created was something she could be certain wasn’t going to aggravate her daughters eczema and allergies, and actually do the job it was created for. It soothed nappy rash, calmed dribble rash and moisturised her daughters delicate skin. Faced with her own allergies and skin problems, she began to use it too for eczema and psoriasis flares, astonished at how it calmed itching, soothed skin and helped clear flares without the worry of steroid creams. They went on to use SOS Balm on every scrape, cut, bite, sting and burn. SOS Balm delivered beyond the results they desired every time. They called it ’magic cream’.
With a product on her hands that worked for their skin needs, safe in the knowledge it was allergen free and contained nothing that would trigger their skin, SOS Balm created certainty in uncertain times. With one less thing to worry about, knowing she always had something on hand to soothe her daughters skin, created ease even when she had no clue what else to do as a new mother! That little bit of certainty is now available to you. Natural ingredients that work, in the convenience of a balm, because sometimes knowing at least one product has your back, can be all it takes to get you on track.
About the founder of SOS Balm
The mother mentioned above was me, and the girl in the picture is my daughter. I realised the hard way that our bodies aren't designed to cope with the sheer volume of chemicals they are subjected to, a large majority of them hidden unknowingly in our products that we apply every day. Mine and my daughters body just showed that to us in an obvious way, creating allergic reactions to unwanted chemicals both in skincare and in food.
Having suffered with eczema and psoriasis the majority of my life and developing chemical sensitivities post pregnancy, I'd put up with symptoms and next to no solutions. When my daughter was born, and was diagnosed early on with eczema and food allergies, I didn't want the same discomfort for her that I'd tolerated. We tackled what she ate that caused reactions, but I quickly realised what was coming into contact with her skin was an issue too.
I stripped every product we used back and replaced with gentle, 'natural as possible' alternatives. I even made my own washing powder at one point! Slowly i realised which products were causing an issue and the creams and nappy balms, soaps and baby oils were some of them. I tried everything from pure olive oil on skin to plain water in baths, only to end up in an oily sticky mess or feeling like we were missing out. I tried countless 'clean' products and most of them were useless at best.
SOS Balm began as a solution to a problem, but meant so much more to me. I was annoyed that I had to go to the lengths of creating my own product, at a time when I was overwhelmed, stressed, sleep deprived and full of anxiety. Mixing some grated soap and bicarbonate of soda to create washing powder was one thing, but learning how to formulate a skincare product took things to a whole new level. I felt abandoned by those products that were used on me as a child, that we had used for years, that I relied on and when I looked beneath the surface felt quite betrayed to find they weren't all they seemed. I'd had problems myself with products as an adult but felt sure I could trust the baby products on the market, after all they were designed for babies!? It was almost like I'd been catfish'd by a pot of cream! It seems trivial but when you just need something to go right, when everything around you is in turmoil, it's important. I wanted at least a cream or balm to grab every nappy change, or for every rash or patch of sore skin that appeared, without scrutinising every label and ingredient for fear of it causing discomfort to my child, or without feeling guilty for using it in case it did.
You feel every part of your child's discomfort as a parent, wince at every sore, weeping patch of eczema and sometimes want to cry when you just can't stop them itching, knowing it's causing more damage to their skin. I felt like I'd found a solution to at least one piece of the puzzle with SOS Balm, although it took a lot of experiments and mistakes to get it right. From the offset I could tell the positive impact those natural ingredients were having on my baby's skin. They weren't only doing the job intended, like a stopping urine coming into contact with skin as a nappy barrier cream or helping dry patches as a moisturiser, they were actually nourishing mine and my baby's skin too, taking away the discomfort, easing the itching and helping to repair the skin.
I was astonished at these natural ingredients capabilities and wanted to mess with them as little as possible. I added each ingredient one at a time, trying before adapting so I could see instantly if anything was going to disagree with our skin. I researched and studied, allergens, ingredients, irritants and chemical processes, those sleepless nights proved to be perfect research time!
As someone who had worked their way through hundreds of products in my lifetime, both off the shelf and prescribed, I'd never used a product that felt like it was adding something good to my skin, like it was actually contributing to me, until I used SOS Balm, 'magic cream' as it was know to us.
I gave a pot to every person who presented a skin complaint. Before long friends and family who had tried SOS Balm insisted I 'get it out there so others can try it'. It took me a few years to pluck up the courage, at first on a small scale, teaming it with other products I had made like bath bombs and bath teas for eczema prone skin. Then I had a realisation, there were others like me, in the position I was back then, desperate for a solution and I was being selfish not sharing it...
In August 2023 I took the plunge and Introduced SOS Balm, properly, to the world. In just a few weeks it was shortlisted in the 2024 Mother and Baby awards for 'best nappy cream'! (we're waiting to see if it has won in November!). I also have had many customers and testers coming back with incredible accounts of SOS Balm clearing nappy rash or eczema in their 4 yr olds, and several accounts of it clearing patches of psoriasis! So many things I knew SOS Balm was capable of and now others were reporting that back too!
I can't claim that SOS Balm will solve your skin issues, I can't even if I wanted to because of regulations, however I can tell you that it is an amazing multitasking balm, whether you use it for nappy rash or eczema flares, what it isn't going to do is add a tonne of artificial ingredients to the problem. There is no one size fits all, but this comes pretty close.
SOS Balm is a creation I'm proud of. I hope SOS Balm can be for you the knight in a shiny little pot that it was for me and I'd love to hear how you get on with it! Lucy x
